Reigning MVP Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani hit historic home runs in the first inning.

Judge started the fireworks with a 446-foot solo shot on a 1-1 pitch from Tony Gonsolin. The Yankees slugger's 19th homer of the season tied him for third in the majors with Kyle Schwarber.

Ohtani matched Max Fried's first pitch with a 417-foot homer to center field in front of 53,276 fans.

"I thought he was imitating me," Judge said with a laugh.

It was the first time in major league history that a reigning MVP had homered in the first inning of a game. San Francisco's Barry Bonds and Oakland's Miguel Tejada were the first MVPs to homer in the same game, including the World Series. They did so on June 30, 2002, to homer in the same game, including the World Series.

"I really thought it was important to be able to get another run in that situation, because I knew speed was really important," Ohtani said through an interpreter.

The judge did not downplay the rivalry with Ohtani.

"Don't try to think about it," he said. "I have a job in the field. I have to make plays, score some runs for the team. You try not to get too excited about it."

Ohtani led off the sixth with a single to right-center and came back to first base, but missed. It set up a huge four-run win, and the Dodgers won 8-5, their 19th of the season.

The long ball increased Ohtani's major league lead to 22. He tied the Dodgers' record for most runs in a month with 15.

"When Shohei obviously plays well, we always play really well," first baseman Freddie Freeman said. "I've heard the chant for MVP, and he's on his way to doing it again."

The Jazz are most impressed with Ohtani's consistency at the plate.

"He's been coming up over the years," he said. "Every batter, you don't know if he's going to rip the ball to me in right field or take Max Fried's first pitch hitter against the field."
