Why has Israel launched another large-scale airstrike on Gaza?

Israel has launched a massive airstrike on the Gaza Strip. The Hamas-controlled Health Ministry said at least 400 Palestinians had been killed.


Israel launched a massive airstrike on the besieged Palestinian enclave of Gaza on Tuesday (March 18) after talks with US President Donald Trump, according to a live report by Qatar-based Al Jazeera. The death toll rose to 308.


The Israeli attack began shortly after 2:30 a.m. local time. The Gaza Health Ministry said many of the Palestinians killed were women and children.

Israeli airstrikes continued overnight on densely populated towns, makeshift schools, residential buildings, and displaced Palestinians sheltering in tents in Gaza.


The attack came at a time when the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is at its peak, as Israel has blocked all aid and goods from entering for more than two weeks.

A statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said that Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered the attack.


The statement said, "This comes after Hamas repeatedly refused to release our hostages, as well as rejected all proposals received from the US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff and the mediators."

"Israel will now take action against Hamas by increasing its military force," it added.

It is worth noting that Israel has been carrying out continuous air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip since Hamas' unprecedented attack on October 7, 2023. So far, about 50,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. More than 100,000 people have been injured.

A ceasefire agreement was signed between Hamas and Israel in Gaza on January 19. Efforts to extend the ceasefire have been stalled for weeks. Today's attack is the largest in Gaza since the end of a 42-day truce.


White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt told Fox News on Tuesday (March 18) that Israel consulted with US President Donald Trump's administration before carrying out the attack.

A White House spokesman told Fox News that Israel consulted with US President Donald Trump's administration before carrying out the attack.

"The Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, Iran, and Iran-backed terrorist groups should take President Trump very seriously," a Trump administration spokesman said.
