Trump had 'productive' talks with Putin on Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump said he had "good and productive" talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on a ceasefire in Ukraine. The US proposed the ceasefire.

The comments came after a meeting in Moscow on Thursday evening between Vladimir Putin and US special envoy Steve Witkoff. The Kremlin said they discussed the peace process. It was as optimistic as the US, but "with caution".

Donald Trump wrote on his social media account, Truth Social, about the talks with Russia, saying, "There is a very good chance of ending this terrible and bloody war."

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Vladimir Putin of trying to prolong the talks to continue the war.

And British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said the Russian president should not be allowed to "play" with the ceasefire proposal.

While the United States has expressed optimism, many unresolved issues remain in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Just as much of Ukraine is under Russian control, some Russian territory in the Kursk region is under Ukrainian control. As a result, analysts are not yet entirely optimistic about a ceasefire.

Earlier this week, Ukraine said it had accepted a U.S.-proposed ceasefire agreement. Russia has yet to formally accept it.

On Thursday, Vladimir Putin said the idea of a ceasefire wascorrect, and we support it… but there are some nuances.”

He has imposed some tough conditions for peace in Ukraine, and Zelensky has responded by calling it “cunning.” Zelenskyy has made a series of posts on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

In the posts, he continued his criticism, writing, “Vladimir Putin cannot withdraw from this war. Because it will give him nothing.”

“That is why he is now imposing very harsh and unacceptable conditions before a ceasefire to thwart diplomacy,” he said.

In his opinion, Putin will continue to negotiate with everyone forever. “He will continue to negotiate for days, weeks, months without meaning. Meanwhile, his soldiers will continue to kill people.”

“Every condition that Putin puts forward is an attempt to sabotage diplomacy. This is how Russia works, and we have warned about this in advance,” Zelensky said.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said that the Kremlin’s “ignorance” of the ceasefire proposal proved that Putin “is not serious about the peace process.”

“If Russia finally comes to the negotiating table, we must be ready to implement a ceasefire to ensure a lasting peace. And if it does not, we must increase economic pressure on Russia to stop the war,” he said.

Starmer will hold a video call today with about 25 leaders to discuss the peacekeeping mission proposed at a conference in London a few days ago.

He called it a “coalition of the willing” who would work to deter future Russian aggression if the US-proposed ceasefire takes effect.

Zelensky called on all those who could influence Russia, especially the United States, to take strict action against Russia to help Ukraine end the war, as he believes Putin will not voluntarily end the war.

In a post on Friday, X said, “Putin is lying about the reality of the battlefield, the death toll, and the true state of his economy,” and that Putin is “doing everything he can to thwart diplomacy.”

However, the White House believes the two sides “have never been closer to peace.” Speaking to reporters, White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt said that Thursday's talks between Putin and Witkoff in Moscow were productive.

She also said that Trump is pushing Putin and the Russians to do the right thing.

Meanwhile, Trump has “strongly requested” in his social media posts that Vladimir Putin save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers surrounded by Russian forces.

Ukrainian troops have been holding parts of the Kursk region inside Russia for six months. Now, those soldiers are surrounded by Russian forces. Putin has said they have a choice: surrender or die.

Trump described the massacre as "the worst genocide since World War II" if it were carried out there.
