WASHINGTON — The Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service are investigating a social media post by former FBI Director James Comey that several U.S. officials interpreted as a call to assassinate President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem said Thursday.
In a now-deleted post on Instagram, Comey shared a photo of himself on a beach, creating what he described as a “shell formation” with the numbers “8647.” Administration officials, Republican lawmakers, and Trump aides have strongly condemned the post, saying it was aimed at Trump, the 47th president of the United States.
According to Merriam-Webster, the informal meaning of the word “eighty-six” could be “to save.”
“Shamefully, former FBI Director James Comey called for the assassination of @POTUS Trump,” Noam X wrote. “DHS and the Secret Service are investigating this threat and will respond appropriately.”

“We are aware of the former FBI director’s social media posts, and we take such statements very seriously. Beyond that, we do not comment on defensive intelligence matters,” Anthony Guglielmi, the agency’s communications chief, said in a statement.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budovich accused Comey of publishing something that “could be interpreted as an attack on the current President of the United States.”
“This is deeply concerning to all of us and is being taken seriously,” Budovich wrote in X.
The president's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., has accused Comey of "calling for my father to be killed for no reason."
Comey denied that his post was intended as a threat, saying in a statement that he was unaware that people associated the specific number system with violence.
"I didn't realize that some people associated it with violence. It didn't cross my mind when I saw it, but I'm against violence under any circumstances, so I removed it," he said.
Comey later said in a post on Instagram that he assumed the numbers were "a political message."
The term "eighty-six" has been used in political contexts before, including by Trump's one-time Attorney General-elect Matt Gaetz, who used the term in a post last year to name Republicans with whom he had had past feuds.

FBI Director Kash Patel said the bureau is ready to "provide all necessary assistance" to the Secret Service, which has primary jurisdiction over the investigation.
In a letter to Patel and Secret Service Director Sean Curran on Thursday night, Republican Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn..., called for an "immediate" joint investigation into Comey's post.
Comey had only four years left on his 10-year term when Trump fired him in May 2017.
Under Comey, the FBI began investigating alleged contacts between members of the Trump campaign and Russian organizations in 2016. Trump fired Comey months after the investigation became public, indicating that the investigation was one of the reasons for Comey's firing.
The White House said at the time that the main reason for his firing was the conclusion by senior Justice Department officials that Comey had failed to investigate Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while she was secretary of state in 2016.
A few months later, the Secret Service thwarted a second assassination attempt on Trump at a golf course near Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate when an agent spotted a man with a rifle outside the property.
The alleged perpetrator faces several federal and state charges, including attempted murder of a leading presidential candidate, possession of a firearm for a crime of violence, and assault on a federal officer. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Comey has faced ire from both political parties in recent years. Democrats have mocked his decision to announce the reopening of the Clinton email investigation days before the 2016 election, a decision the former secretary of state herself claimed in 2017 helped Trump win.
Comey's decision to publish a book despite criticism from Trump and the ongoing investigation has made him a frequent target of Republicans.
The former FBI director is now a fiction writer. He has been promoting the release of a new novel with numerous posts about the book on his Instagram account, one of which shows him reading a book on the beach.
