The 2025 Women's College World Series has been mired in controversy.

Texas catcher Reese Atwood threw out Texas Tech baserunner Logan Hellman after he attempted to steal second base in the first inning of the WCWS Championship Series

However, Red Raiders coach Gerry Glasko quickly challenged the out call and checked for obstruction. After review, the umpires ruled that shortstop Lehane Good interfered with Hellman's ability to get to second base. Hellman was awarded second base and removed from the outfield.

One batter later, Mihia Davis singled to right-center field to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead on a pitcher's duel between Nizari Kanadi and Teagan Kavanagh.

What is obstruction? College Softball Rule Interpretation

Rule 9.5 of the NCAA Softball Rule Book states that interference is when a defensive player places himself in a runner's path and prevents that player from safely reaching that base.

"Interference occurs when a defensive player, not in possession of the ball or in the process of fielding a batted ball, obstructs the batter's attempt to contact a pitch or impedes the progress of a runner legally running on a live ball. This may be intentional or unintentional."

According to the rules, because Good blocked the leading edge of second base, the stolen base did not give Atem Haleman a clear path to second base, so the umpires ruled it interference.

While the play was undoubtedly controversial, it ultimately proved pointless, as Texas's Reese Atwood hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning, resulting in an intentional walk, giving the Longhorns an eventual 2-1 victory.
