The biggest showdown ever": Norwegian company cuts off US energy supplies amid Trump vs. Zelensky

Norwegian energy company Hultback Bunkers has announced that it will stop supplying fuel to US military forces based in Norway and American ships in Norwegian ports, as they have expressed dissatisfaction with the recent US policy towards Ukraine.

Who are Hultback Bunkers?

“Hultback Bunkers is a Norwegian energy supplier that supplies marine fuel to shipping and military operations. Based in Kristiansand, Norway, the company specializes in bunkering services for ships operating in Norwegian waters, “providing fuel supply and distribution to both civilian and military customers.”

“America has started a backstabbing TV show,” says Hultback Bunkers, which will supply approximately 3,000,000 liters of fuel to the US military by 2024.

In direct response to the recent controversial meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday, a Norwegian oil and shipping company has announced that it will immediately stop supplying fuel to US forces stationed in the country’s ports.

Following the incident, Hultbak Bunkers, which will supply the US military with around 3,000,000 liters of fuel in 2024, issued a scathing statement on Facebook.

“Today we witnessed the greatest ‘pornographic show’ ever broadcast live on television by the current American President and his Vice President,” the company wrote. “A huge credit to the Ukrainian President for his patience and calmness as the US showed him a backstabbing TV show. It made us sick. Short and sweet.

“As a result, we have decided to immediately stop supplying fuel to American forces in Norway and their ships in Norwegian ports,” they announced. The post was reportedly deleted after traffic to the company's page increased.

Trump-Zelensky meeting

The high-level Oval Office meeting, aimed at discussing potential peace talks with Russia and future U.S. access to Ukraine’s mineral resources, quickly turned into heated discussions.

President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance openly criticized President Zelensky, accusing him of endangering global security by opposing a peace deal with Russia and showing a lack of gratitude for U.S. support. The talks ended abruptly without the signing of the expected mineral agreement.

"We have a moral compass."

In an interview with Norwegian outlet Kistens, Hultbak Bunkers owner, chairman, and CEO Gunnar Gran stood by the decision.

“As you probably understand, not a single liter will be delivered until Trump is done,” Mr. Gran said.

The company has publicly appealed, “We encourage all Norwegians and Europeans to follow our example. Slava Ukraine.”

“We support Ukraine. We have many Ukrainian employees, and we know how badly this war affects them and their families,” Mr. Gran said.

Based in Are, Norway, Hultbak Bunkers specializes in supplying fuel products, lubricants, aquatic disinfectants, and oil spill containment materials. While its direct contact with US forces in Norway is limited, the US Marine Corps relies on commercial partners for logistical support during exercises and when dealing with regional crises.

Government statement

The Norwegian government has not issued any similar guidelines.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Storr said it was too early to conclude the meeting. "We are still five to six weeks into Trump's presidency. I think we still have to work to understand the consequences of his style, actions and words," Mr Storr told NRK.

Not the first business position against war

Gunnar Gran doesn’t believe the energy boycott “will upset anyone.” “It’s just moral support,” he said.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the company has already stopped doing business with Russian companies, resulting in significant revenue losses.

“It gave a lot of our competitors a lot of extra revenue. We lost a lot of revenue. But we have a moral compass,” Mr. Gran told Kistens.

“Now the United States is being singled out based on their treatment of the Ukrainians,” he said. “We choose our customers.”
